The ICC World Test Championship(WTC) is a league competition for Test cricket run by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It started on 1 August 2019 and is intended to be the ICC test championship. It is in line with the ICC’s goal of having one pinnacle tournament for each of the three formats of international cricket. ICC World Test Championship(WTC) 2023 was won by Australia.

World Test Championship Format

The world test championship is contested by the top nine Test-playing nations, who play six series each – three at home and three away. The world test championship teams are ranked on the basis of their points, which are awarded for wins, draws, and losses. The top two teams at the end of the cycle will contest the wtc final, which will be played over five days.

World test championship points are calculated as follows:

• Win: 12 points
• Draw: 4 points
• Loss: 0 points

World test championship teams are also awarded bonus points for batting and bowling performances in each inning. Bonus points are awarded as follows:

• Batting:
  • 1 point for every 100 runs scored
  • 1 point for every 50 runs scored in the first 100 overs of the innings
• Bowling:
  • 1 point for every 5 wickets taken
  • 1 point for every 100 runs conceded

World Test Championship History

The ICC World Test Championship was first announced in June 2017. The inaugural world test championship was scheduled to run from July 2019 to June 2021, with the wtc final to be played in June 2021. However, the start of the championship was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first match of the test championship was eventually played in August 2021, and the ICC test championship final was played in June 2021.

New Zealand won the inaugural test world cup, defeating India in the final by eight wickets.

The current champions of the ICC World Test Championship are Australia. They won the world test championship in June 2023, defeating India in the final by 209 runs.
